Hotels & Motels in Grande Prairie, Alberta

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Grande Prairie, Alberta.
Grande Prairie, in Alberta's Peace River Region, is situated in the northern part of the province, 500 km (310 mi) northwest of Alberta's capital city, Edmonton. Founded in the early 1800s, Grande Prairie was established as a simple trading post for the historic Hudson Bay Company. Since then, this tiny town has prospered as a trade and transportation corridor, grown with the agricultural industry and seen the fortunes of oil and gas.

Travellers typically passed through Grande Prairie as they headed northward and westward to other destinations within Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon and Alaska. However, Grande Prairie has grown from a simple trade and transportation corridor to a bustling city with a beautiful blend of urban amenities and natural landscapes and visitors now come to Grande Prairie for its history, hospitality and recreational opportunities.

Accommodations of every type are available in Grande Prairie, including approximately 25 hotels and motels suited to any budget and preference, located close to the airport and highways, near sights and attractions and in quieter locations closer to nature.

CONNECTING BY AIR & ROAD

Many travellers choose to stay overnight in the city while making connections through Grande Prairie Airport. Since Grande Prairie is the largest city in northern Alberta and a major junction to many destinations, local entrepreneurs have established several hotels specifically designed to meet the needs of these travellers.

The majority of these accommodations are located along 100 Avenue, only a few minutes' drive from the airport. Amenities and services such as complimentary breakfast, airport shuttle service and long-term parking are offered by mid-range independent establishments such as the Stanford Inn.

In addition, those visiting the area on business will appreciate that some hotels offer business centres and services. The Quality Hotel and Conference Centre is especially well suited to business travellers; guests can make use of the high-speed Internet connection and photocopying, faxing and courier services as well as meeting rooms and conference facilities.

Several major highways pass through Grande Prairie, taking commercial and private travellers in all four directions. Tourists driving to the Great White North inevitably stop in this fair city to take a break from the road. For these visitors, staying in a chain-brand hotel is a consistent and reliable option. The amenities and services of budget-friendly properties such as the Days Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Super 8 are a welcome respite for visitors on the road. Comfortable beds, on-site gyms and pools ensure that a short break is very relaxing and extra amenities such as kitchenettes and laundry facilities make it easy to travel light.

EXPLORING HISTORY & CULTURE

Grande Prairie is an important part of Alberta's rich heritage. This vibrant city has a complex history, built on the culture of the First Nations people who originally lived here, early European explorers, pioneers who made new homes and broke the land, and then large-scale industry: agriculture, forestry, oil and gas. Visitors can learn about all of these historical aspects of the city at the Grande Prairie Museum and the Prairie Art Gallery.

The best way to view the many cultural sites around town is by staying in a downtown hotel and exploring the city by foot. The Grande Prairie Inn is a recently renovated independent establishment close to major attractions and the Holiday Inn is also well situated for sightseeing.

A RELAXING GETAWAY

Many travellers plan low-key vacations, preferring to focus on luxury accommodation and the opportunity to relax. Whether it is a needed break from the stress of the workplace or a romantic getaway, there are several hotels to serve the needs of these travellers.

The Stonebridge Hotel is centrally located in the centre of town, close to shopping, restaurants and parks. Fully equipped condominium-style suites are available as well as standard guest rooms. The Podollan Inn and Spa is beautifully appointed and guests need not leave the hotel's facilities to enjoy their vacation. In addition to the spa and wellness centre, guests can enjoy a gourmet meal at the grill or unwind in front of the fireplace in the lounge.

ENDLESS RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Grande Prairie is surrounded, as the name suggests, by endless fields meeting the horizon to the north, east and west. And to the south, a vast boreal forest leads to the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This makes Grande Prairie a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, golfers and fishers in summer and skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers in winter.

There are several parks in the city and those visitors who want to focus on recreational time in the great outdoors would be best accommodated close to one of these natural areas. The Best Western Hotel and Suites and Service Plus Inns and Suites are both situated near Muskoseepi Park, which has extensive multi-use trails and recreational facilities. Staff at hotel front desks are always glad to provide information about the city's events, sights and recreational opportunities.

For visitors who choose to bring their pets on vacation, Grande Prairie has several pet-friendly lodgings. However it is advisable to call ahead to confirm this is the case at one's chosen hotel.
